Sharing my 9 Secret Leadership Coaching Questions

October 03, 20234 min read

With over 30 years of personal leadership development and an extensive career as a leadership coach, I've had the privilege of collaborating with leaders at all organizational levels, spanning from directors to CEOs and everything in between. My journey has taken me across a diverse spectrum of professionals, encompassing both startups and Fortune 500 companies, including renowned industry giants such as Amazon, Samsung, PayPal, eBay, Capital One, and many others.

Leaders like yourself frequently seek my guidance when sleepless nights, overflowing inboxes, and relentless stress become the norm. You've experienced the frustration of non-committal attitudes and the blame game, amidst the perpetual whirlwind of finger-pointing. Even in the era of hybrid work models, your office remains bustling but often in disarray. Instead of a well-coordinated team, it often feels like everyone is marching to their own tune, creating a chaotic environment. The work is there, but it doesn't seem to harmonize to propel the company forward.

Today, I’m going to share nine of my secret yet pivotal questions that I've utilized while working with leaders of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Think of these questions as your compass, expertly guiding you through the intricate landscape of leadership and assisting you in nurturing growth within your organization. So, sit down with your coffee and really think about these questions:

1. "Are you running your department or leading it?"

To kick things off, let's start with a fundamental query: Are you merely managing your department's daily tasks, or are you actively inspiring your team to work toward a common goal? This distinction is vital and holds the key to your organization's success.

2. "Are you doing more fire-fighting or fire prevention in your department?"

In your role as a leader, you might find yourself constantly addressing problems as they arise. But are you also taking steps to prevent these issues from happening in the first place? This question urges you to strike a balance and adopt a more proactive approach.

3. "Why hasn't the problem been solved yet?"

Consider those persistent issues that seem to linger. Why haven't they been resolved? This question prompts you to delve into the root causes, revisit your strategies, and perhaps consider new approaches to finally conquer these challenges.

4. "Do you have more participants or contributors within your team?"

The success of your team is a reflection of your leadership. Are your team members actively contributing to your department's success, or are they simply fulfilling their roles without much enthusiasm? This question highlights the importance of fostering a culture of teamwork and active participation.

5. "Do you have any habits that hinder you from becoming the leader you aspire to be?"

As a leader, it's crucial to be aware of your habits. We all possess both positive and less favorable habits. This question encourages you to reflect on any habits that might be impeding your progress and explore ways to enhance your leadership abilities.

6. "What percent of an employee's departure are you willing to own?"

Employee turnover can present significant challenges, but as a leader, it's essential to take responsibility for retaining your team members. Contemplate the extent to which you are willing to accept responsibility for an employee's decision to leave and view it as an opportunity for personal growth and improved leadership.

7. "Why would someone want to work in your organization?"

Creating a welcoming work environment is pivotal for attracting and retaining top talent. Think about what makes your organization an appealing place to work. This question encourages you to enhance the desirability of your organization for potential team members.

8. "Describe you one year from now. What is the next version of you going to be like?"

Leadership is a continuous journey of growth and development. Take a moment to envision an improved version of yourself as a leader. What are your aspirations, and how can you evolve into a more effective and inspirational leader?

9. "What would have made this year truly meaningful for you – personally and professionally?"

Leadership isn't solely about achieving organizational objectives; it's also about personal satisfaction. Reflect on what would define a successful year for you, both in your personal and professional life. This question helps align your leadership journey with your broader life goals.

While engaging and empowering my clients, I often use versions of these nine questions.   They can help you navigate the intricate path of becoming a more effective leader, regardless of your role. They provide invaluable insights, encouraging self-reflection and a deeper understanding of your leadership responsibilities.

You may wonder why you should invest time and energy in pondering these questions. Well, leadership isn't a one-size-fits-all endeavor. It's a dynamic, ever-evolving process, and to accelerate your growth and learning as a leader, you don't have to go it alone.
