Sink or Swim? Navigating the Treacherous Waters of Return to Office

February 20, 20244 min read

As you might have gleaned from my LinkedIn profile, a significant portion of my career—12 and a half years to be exact—was spent at Computer Associates, headquartered on Long Island. During the holidays, I found myself back on Long Island, only to witness the demolition and bulldozing of a once-thriving building that had stood empty for some time.

It struck me as a shame because that facility had been a cornerstone of our operations—a testament to our company's growth and success. Yet, like many others, it had fallen silent, a casualty of changing times and remote work trends.

However, amidst the empty offices and abandoned buildings, I've noticed a shift—a glimmer of change on the horizon. Companies are beginning to reconsider their remote work policies, and the once-deserted offices are slowly coming back to life.

Now, you might be facing a similar decision: whether to bring your team back to the office. It's a decision fraught with uncertainty, akin to navigating a ship through stormy seas. But fret not! With the right approach, you can steer your company through this transition and set sail towards success.

Picture this: Your team, back together in the office, sparking creativity, fostering collaboration, and strengthening your company culture. Sure, remote work had its perks during the pandemic, but now it's time to weigh the benefits of being physically present in the workplace once again.

Take a cue from industry giants like Amazon, Apple, and Disney—they're leading the charge back to the office. They understand the power of face-to-face interaction in sparking innovation and strengthening bonds among coworkers.

Now, let's talk strategy. As you chart your course for the return to the office, keep these principles in mind:

1. Listen up: Your team's sentiments matter. Some may be eager to return, while others might feel apprehensive. Take the time to listen to their concerns openly and address them with empathy. Companies like Salesforce and Uber are setting the example by prioritizing employee well-being and actively listening to their needs.

2. Flexibility is key: Recognize that not everyone thrives in a traditional office environment. Consider offering flexible work options, such as hybrid schedules or remote work days. Companies like Chipotle and Redfin are finding the balance, giving employees the freedom to choose what works best for them.

3. Lead by example: Show your team that you're fully committed to the return to the office by being present and engaged. Take inspiration from leaders like Elon Musk and Howard Schultz, who lead by example and encourage their teams to come together in the workplace.

4. Keep communication flowing: Transparency is paramount during times of change. Keep your team informed every step of the way and solicit feedback to ensure everyone feels valued and included. Companies like Meta and Google prioritize open communication to foster a culture of trust and collaboration.

But wait, there's more! As you navigate this transition, it's also an opportune moment to hone your leadership skills.. Whether you're a seasoned executive or a first-time manager, building your leadership capabilities will be critical in guiding your team through this period of change. Here are some tips to help you level up:

1. Embrace empathy: Understand that each member of your team may experience this transition differently. Take the time to empathize with their concerns and perspectives, demonstrating genuine care and support.

2. Foster resilience: Cultivate a mindset of resilience within yourself and your team, focusing on adaptability and perseverance in the face of challenges.

3. Strengthen communication skills: Effective communication is essential for strong leadership. Hone your ability to convey your vision, listen actively, and provide clear feedback to your team.

4. Lead with authenticity: Authentic leaders inspire trust and loyalty. Stay true to your values, lead by example, and create an environment where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.

5. Invest in development: Never stop learning and growing as a leader. Seek out opportunities for professional development to enhance your leadership skills and stay ahead of the curve.

By focusing on these leadership skills, you'll not only navigate the return to office with confidence but also emerge as a stronger and more effective leader. So, roll up your sleeves, embrace the challenge, and lead your team towards a brighter future together!
